Replacement Window FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, “Winter will be colder and snowier than normal” here in Maryland, with the coldest periods occurring in late December, most of January, mid-February, and early March. For homeowners, this means one thing; it’s time to tackle home energy efficiency. And while your HVAC system plays an important role, in order for your home to be as efficient as possible, the envelope must also be efficient – your roof, walls, doors, and, of course, windows.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), windows account for 25-40% of your annual heating and cooling costs. Yikes! So your windows seem like a great place to start.
Replacement Window FAQs
Do I Need Replacement Windows? Will They Save Me Money?
Well, maybe. The truth is that not everyone needs replacement windows. If your current windows are not very old, replacing them won’t have a major impact on your home’s energy efficiency. According to JELD-WEN, replacing old, single-pane windows with Energy Star qualified windows can save homeowners as much as $501 annually. Newer double-pane windows are a little less impressive – $111 annually – but still impactful.
So, if your windows are over 25 years old, you should consider replacing them.
Do I have to Replace Every Window in My House at the Same Time?
No, you don’t have to replace every window at the same time, but you should. This is the only way to ensure maximum energy savings. However, the scope of the project is entirely up to you. If you don’t mind mismatched windows in your home, you can certainly replace a few at a time.
Can Windows Be Replaced Year-Round?
Quite simply, yes. While spring and summer tend to be the two most popular seasons to install replacement windows, these energy-savers can be replaced any time of the year – spring, summer, winter, or fall. All you have to do is call.
However, according to Bob Merrill, JELD-WEN executive vice president of sales and marketing, “Fall is the perfect time to replace windows and doors, before utility costs peak this winter.”
Why is there Inert Gas in Between Panes of Glass?
Glass by itself is not a great insulator. However, by adding inert gas – argon or krypton – between window panes can greatly reduce thermal energy transfer and thus increase the window’s insulating factor.
