The level of maintenance required to keep windows looking their best depends on a few factors such as material and size. Whether it’s recommended to care for your windows once a year or once a month, every window gets dirty from time to time. When you find yourself staring at the pollen that has rested on your window rather than looking out of it, it’s time to give it a scrub. Here are a few simple tips on how you can keep your windows clean.

Purchase a Strip Applicator

If you don’t already have one, run to your local hardware store and purchase a strip applicator. You can buy a window cleaning solution while you’re there or you can make your own with warm water and a few tablespoons of dish liquid. The long cloth head of a strip applicator soaks up soapy water, knocking dirt loose without harming the glass.

Remove Excess Water

First, use a squeegee to wipe the excess water from the window. To avoid smudging, start at the top corner of the window and pull the squeegee over the pane in a zig-zag pattern. Wipe the squeegee with a dry cloth at the end of each wipe to limit smearing.

Dry Clean

The last step in your window cleaning process is to remove any water that remains on the edge of the glass with a damp cloth. This will soak the remaining moisture without leaving streaks or smudges. Dry the windowsill with a clean rag and pat your back for your success.

Cleaning Divided Windows

If your windows are too small for the squeegee to fit, you can modify it with a pair of scissors or X-acto knife. Simply cut the edges of the squeegee until it appropriately fits your window panes, and perform the above steps.
