Celebrating National Window Safety Week at Architectural Window Supply

When we remembered that Earth Day was on Friday, we got all excited to write about environmentally friendly windows…before we realized that we jumped the gun and wrote about that a few weeks ago! But we have a solution. Turns out that we wrote about Earth Day during National Window Safety Week — we’ll just do a good old switcheroo and talk about window safety this week. And hey, there’s never a bad time to talk about the environment or window safety, so no harm no foul, right?
About National Window Safety Week
Every year, in the first full week of April (this year it was the 5th through 11th), the National Safety Council promotes awareness and prevention of window-related injuries. It may sound silly to focus on for a whole week, but it’s a bigger problem than you probably imagine. According to a report titled “Safe Kids Worldwide 2015 Report to the Nation: Protecting Children in Your Home,” about eight children under age 5 die each year from falling out of a window, and more than 3,300 suffer injuries severe enough to require a hospital visit. In 1997, the National Safety Council, alongside window and door professionals and safety advocates across the country, established the Window Safety Task Force to educate caregivers about window safety.
Enforcing Window Safety for Children
The Window Safety Task Force offers the following suggestions to help protect children from the dangers of windows. Try to keep children’s play areas away from windows, keep climbable furniture away from windows, and always supervise carefully. Keep windows closed and locked when young children are present. (For double-hung windows, you can open the top sash for ventilation, where the child probably can’t reach.) And remember that screens keep bugs out but don’t keep children in.
Aside from fall danger, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that about one child per month dies from strangulation due to window treatment cords. Parents should check for exposed cords and try to secure them out of children’s reach. Turns out there’s another whole event for that, when the CPSC and the Window Covering Safety Council team up for National Window Covering Safety Month in October.
Since 1997, the Window Safety Task Force has distributed thousands of informational kits with window safety tips. For more information on the entire initiative, click here.
