How to Get Hard Water Stains Off of Your Windows
Cleaning windows can seem like a pretty straightforward job. Grab a cleaner, spray it on, wipe it off. While this might work for touch ups on windows that aren’t all that dirty to begin with, sometimes you need to work a little harder to get those windows crystal clear. This goes double for hard water stains. Whether it’s from the steam in your bathroom or the outside of your windows getting sprayed while watering the garden, hard water stains appear when water evaporates and leaves small mineral deposits behind. These can be more difficult to remove than run of the mill smudges, but there are some tools that make it easier.
Vinegar or Lemon Juice Solution
Both of these common household products are great cleaners for all types of things. For removing hard water stains, just mix the vinegar or lemon juice with water and go at it. Adjust the ratio depending on how stubborn the stain is. If you have a spray bottle laying around you can fill it with the mixture for an easy application, or you can simply dip a cleaning cloth in the solution and wipe away the stain.
Baking Soda and Vinegar
For really tough hard water stains you might need to call in the big guns. A mixture of baking soda and vinegar, as anyone who has sat through a middle school science class can tell you, will instantly foam up when they’re mixed. Once this reaction subsides you’re left with a mixture of sodium acetate and water. This is great for removing hard water stains because the mixture is acidic while the stains are the build up of basic minerals.
