Tips for Improving Window Security
Windows that open are great for letting in a nice breeze or airing out the house, but an open window can look mighty inviting to small children. Knowing there are plenty of ways to enter your home from the outside can make some people uncomfortable, too. If you’re worried about the security of your windows, here are a few tips on how to make them more secure.
Window Locks
Most windows come equipped with basic locks that do more to ensure an airtight closing for energy efficiency purposes than to prevent anyone from getting in or out. If you want added security, there are different kinds of locks that are stronger than the standard ones. Pin locks are a two piece system that involves inserting a pin into a hole that goes through one sash and into the next to prevent the windows from opening. A keyed turnbuckle provides the added security of a keyed lock, but works in the same way as standard vinyl locks. The right lock for you depends on your windows and how much extra security you think you need.
Motion Sensors
Motion sensors these days are more than just noisy alarms that go off when you open the window. Modern motion sensors connect to all types of devices, like your phone, tablet, or computer, allowing you to be notified if a window is open when you’re away from home.
